Seemingly a world away from the rest of the country, the Afro-Caribbean influenced Atlantic region boasts a distinctive culture and laid back pace of life that makes a journey into this region a truly unique experience. Its palm-fringed coast extends 125 miles (200 km) along one of Costa Rica’s most geographically diverse regions. Turquoise waters lap against white-sand beaches in the south, while further north exotic jungle canals offer passage to Amazon-like jungles. Limón, the region’s main port and urban center, is an eclectic mix of cultures, traditions and contagious vitality. In contrast to Costa Rica’s pacific coast, the majority of hotels, lodges and camps are small, intimate and set in lush tropical gardens or forests. North A sea of green laced with ribbons of sparkling silver water greets visitors as they venture into Tortuguero, one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular wilderness areas. Located at the extreme north of Costa Rica’s Atlantic coast, the park is a maze of fresh-water canals that snake their way through exotic jungles filled with diverse plant and wildlife species. One of the world's most important nesting sites for green sea turtles is found here, as well as 50 kinds of fish, countless birds and 160 different mammal species. Several world-renowned jungle lodges, which can only be accessed by boat, offer you world-class sport fishing, guided hikes, turtle nesting tours and jungle canal boat tours.
